Artist Statement
I paint images that convey my past and present experiences as a woman,
as a mother and as a human being. I love
painting imagery that comes from my Mexican cultural heritage; using vivid
colors and forms that others can identify with. I often paint mothers and women
because they are the guiding centers of the family. Through the bond between the mother and
child, teaching them about respecting all of humanity, mothers have the
potential to better the world.
Visual art has the power to transform both
the viewer and the artist. Painting can
be a form of therapy that helps heal emotional pain. In the process of
depicting my emotional wounds, I heal; these wounds on canvas become openings that allow me to connect with
others through their own wounds. It
takes courage to allow oneself to be vulnerable, but this exposure can also be
a source of liberation. I want my work
to impact people in unexpected ways. In my work I seek to create new ways of
seeing and understanding reality, so that people can break with oppressive ways
of seeing and being in the world.
